12 Years After Construction, Haveri Bus Stand Still Lacks City Transport Services

The citizens of Haveri district continue to face significant transportation challenges despite the completion of the city’s central bus stand 12 years ago. The bus stand, which was built with the vision of providing a well-connected city transport system, still remains without a local city transport service.

Residents, especially those from the outskirts, depend on private autos and two-wheelers to commute within the city. With no official city buses to ease transportation, the district’s growing population is forced to navigate expensive and unreliable modes of transport.

Impact on Residents: Shantamma, a resident of Haveri, expressed her frustration, saying, "It’s been over a decade, and there’s still no reliable public transport. Autos charge exorbitant fares, and for senior citizens like me, it's difficult to move around the city."

Students and daily wage workers are among those most affected. Without affordable and accessible city buses, many spend a significant portion of their daily earnings on commuting or are forced to walk long distances.

Promises Unfulfilled: The bus stand, inaugurated with much fanfare, was meant to be a hub for city and intercity services. Authorities had promised that city buses would be introduced soon after the stand's construction. However, after 12 years, there has been little to no progress on this front.

City planners initially designed the bus stand to accommodate both intercity buses and a fleet of local buses. But with no city service operational, the vast infrastructure remains underutilized.

Citizens Demand Action: Public outcry is growing as citizens are calling on local government officials to address the issue. "We have a beautiful bus stand that remains empty most of the time. What’s the use of spending taxpayers' money if it doesn't serve its purpose?" asked a local shop owner.

Various citizens’ groups and activists have started petitions, urging the authorities to launch a city transport service. They argue that an efficient transport system would not only make commuting easier but also reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the city.

Officials Respond: When asked about the delay, a senior official from the city’s transport department cited budget constraints and administrative delays as the primary reasons. "We understand the residents’ concerns, and we are working towards a solution. The process of acquiring new buses and determining optimal routes is underway," the official assured.

However, many residents remain skeptical. They point out that similar promises have been made in the past, with little action to follow.
